During my three-day tour of the Central Region of the National Urban League, I tried to hit as many chapters as possible. Two major events were on the schedule, the St. Louis Young Professionals Gala and the Metroboard Chicago Swanky Soiree Fundraiser. But rental cars beg to be driven and I decided to drive up to Madison, WI, home of one of our newest YP chapters to visit the affiliate. It was an absolutely beautiful facility and the infectious energy surrounding their work rubbed off on me.
I also found I was in vegetarian food heaven and stopped for lunch. Then I followed the motorcycles to Milwaukee to visit my Executive Vice President Richard Badger and try to get some time on President Dorinthia Robinson’s schedule. Hopping back in the car, I made it to the Metroboard fundraiser just in time to bid on my new autographed copy of Michael Jackson’s Thriller Album. Sweet! Worried that I may not be able to afford a place to stay – after that purchase – not really, but it sounds good – Metroboard President Kelly-Ann Vassell offered me a spare bedroom and a fabulous home-cooked breakfast with her team! Thank you lady!
I almost missed my flight due to the great conversation but arrived in St. Louis as scheduled for an airport pick-up from St. Louis YP President Kira Van Niel. The St. Louis gala was beautiful and packed. The highlight of the evening for me were words from Urban League CEO legend James Buford who beamed about the great work of his young professionals.
The next morning, we were up and at them for a fantastic brunch buffet at Jilly’s and two huge cupcakes to go! The best Central Region world tour yet. I love my volunteer job!
