It’s my birthday again and this one is extra special because I’ve been around for even longer than last year. 🙂 Seriously, I thought about what I always wanted for my birthday and any day of the year was for someone to show some love. I’ve received beautiful expressions of love from strangers who held open a door, or commented me on how beautiful a color looked, or picked up the cost of my coffee. Most importantly, I’ve been blessed by receiving a hand up in life.
Recently, I was hit by a young woman and I decided to take care of the damages to give her a second chance at less expensive auto insurance until she could get on her feet. I saw myself and my daughter in her. I’d forgiven myself a couple of scratches over the life of my car, why not forgive her scratch.
So I’m asking you to think differently about the negative stereotypes that brand black women in particular and women of color as a whole. Instead of assuming our scowl is directed at you, think of the day we may have had or the life circumstances that inform our facial expressions. 🙂 And by all means, if we have supported you or been kind or helpful, show us some appreciation.
My birthday, this #BILoveU (Because I Love You) campaign is just an opportunity to show love to women and girls of color for two months. Who knows, maybe it will continue through 2016?
Let me know what you do and let me know if someone is unexpectedly kind to you. Hearing stories of kindness for women of color will truly make this the best birthday ever! #BILoveU #HopeThisHelps #OperationGrowth
