So the first order of business after I learned of the earthquake was to check on Secretary Lassiter and Treasurer Perkins.  I had no idea it impacted Chair Randolph in North Carolina and EVP Thomas in New York. All were okay.  We also found that YPs from Northern Virginia, Thursday Network and Northern Wilmington were okay through the power of Twitter (@nulyp).

I am extremely impressed by the emergency plan of the National Urban League and really proud of the response from my agency and Craig Fuguate in particular.

Within the hour there were tweets with details about the quake and preparedness information for citizens.  They also capitalized on an opportunity to prepare the nation for landfall of Hurricane Irene.  Check out the new blog:  http://blog.fema.gov/2011/08/quake-in-dc-serves-as-reminder-to-get.html

So while we celebrate Dr. King’s life and legacy through the memorial, don’t forget your rainboots and umbrellas.  If you won’t be able to make it check out this post from the National Urban League’s facebook page.  http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/08/22/earlyshow/main20095369.shtml?tag=contentBody%3BcbsCarousel%3Ftag%3Dfacebook
