Review: Poetry in Pugilism – ‘The Royale’ at CBT’s Jenny Boyd Theatre — Arts Knoxville

by | Mar 30, 2026

Arts Knoxville critic Alan Sherrod gave The Royale a glowing review, calling the Clarence Brown Theatre production a play that embraces lyricism and explores the deepest struggles of ambition and character beyond the boxing ring.

Kerwin Thompson’s performance as Wynton, the worn-down veteran trainer, drew specific praise for grounding the audience in the raw history of prizefighting and the meaning behind the title.

The full cast — led by Denzel Dejournette as Jay, with Anquanizia Hall, Keith Allen Davis Jr., and Jeb Burris — was praised for layered, physically precise performances. Directed by Tosin Morohunfola.
