BRComm client and Atlanta-based performing artist Kerwin Thompson, known professionally as The Leading Man, joins the cast of The Royale as a featured teaching actor at the University of Tennessee’s Clarence Brown Theatre.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — March 2026 — Kerwin Thompson, Emmy Award-winning actor and SAG-AFTRA/AEA member known as The Leading Man, has joined the cast of The Royale, the critically anticipated production running March 25 through April 12, 2026 at the University of Tennessee’s newly opened Jenny Boyd Theatre, part of the Clarence Brown Theatre Company’s 51st season.

Thompson portrays Wynton, a central character in playwright Marco Ramirez’s gripping drama inspired by the life of Jack Johnson, the first African-American heavyweight boxing champion of the world. Set in 1905 at the crossroads of ambition, race, and history, The Royale asks one of sport’s most enduring questions: what is the true cost of greatness?

Thompson’s participation is part of the Clarence Brown Theatre’s longstanding commitment to bringing professional artists into its productions as teaching actors, pairing real-world experience with the rigorous training environment of the university. The production is directed by Tosin Morohunfola, whose credits include Lawmen: Bass Reeves (Paramount+), Run The World (STARZ), and The Chi (Showtime).

This engagement marks a meaningful moment in Thompson’s career. Trained at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre and mentored by 2X Tony Award nominee Freddie Hendricks through the Youth Ensemble of Atlanta, Thompson has built a multi-decade career spanning theater, film, and television. His credits include King Silas in The Quest (Disney+), roles in CSI: Vegas, The Comic Shop, and two Cannes-premiered films. His 2022 Emmy Award and National Gold ADDY Award for Best Commercial further underscore his versatility as a performing artist.

The Jenny Boyd Theatre, which opened its inaugural season in 2026, is a state-of-the-art, flexible performance space that brings audiences into intimate proximity with live performance. The Royale is the second production in the venue’s inaugural season and runs 1 hour 35 minutes with no intermission.
